Swashbuckler's Mommy
Just In Time for Mother's Day!

A Dave Franzwa (BigDangDeal) Production

ow often have you wished that you had something really special to give Mom on her day?

Hi, Dave Franzwa here.

If you're like most of us, life whirls by us at an astounding rate. It's hard enough to get the things done in our day that we need to, let alone those things we want to do.

Yet when Mother's Day creeps up on us, we fly into a last-minute flurry to find something more meaningful than the usual flowers and a card, but the time element has caused a panic so we settle, once again, for...

Flowers and a card.

Flowers and cards are nice. They're easy and comfortable, something you can count on for those last-minute panic attacks.

But this gift is for one of the most important people in your life. Don't you want to do something a little different. Something she'll remember you for long past the last wilted petal falls to the kitchen floor?

Something more personal than a new toaster?

(Just what she wants. One more thing to tie her to the kitchen;-/)

How about poetry?

Poetry always makes for a nice Mother's Day gift. But it's got to be more personal, creative, and interesting than "Roses are red,etc.." to make her feel special.

It has to be something she'll cherish, and let's face it, not everybody has the gift of poetry.

Let me ask you, how many times a year does your Mom dig through her box of "Roses are red" cards looking for the ones that you sent?

She doesn't keep them?

My point, exactly!

Those kind of cards are a dime-a-dozen (actually, about 5 bucks these days), and their usefulness ends the same day she puts the vase away because the flowers finally got tossed.

Who keeps that stuff anyway? No one!

Well actually...

Mine did! But that's because I'm a poet. She didn't keep the generic "Roses are red" variety, at least none that I could find.

Now, if my poetry hadn't been any good (and I have it on fairly good authority that it is;-), Mom might not have kept those either, but I didn't leave her much choice in the matter. I gave her a nice antique autograph album for Mother's Day a long time ago, primed the pump with a few of my poems, then updated the book for her periodically.

She cherished that book! Even when her memory started failing her, she always knew where that book was.

Now that's special!

That was probably one of the most clever things I've done in my life.

  • I saved time
  • I never had to think too hard on what gift to get her
  • and I could use it for every occasion

I know. You're thinking, "that's all fine and dandy for you, Dave. You're a poet. My mom would still end up with "roses are red..".

Guess what?

I've made it possible for you to do that for your special Mom, too.

Introducing:

Swashbuckler's Mommy

Swashbuckler's Mommy is a heart-warming rendition of a day in the life of a rambunctious country-kid, about knee-high to a grasshopper, with an imagination as big as all outdoors.

Written in 1989 as a Mother's Day gift, Swashbuckler's Mommy is the first of Dave Franzwa's Swashbuckler Series of poems.

I like to think of my work as "spiritual entertainment." Ever since that fateful Mother's Day in 1989, I've been urged (rather vigorously at times) to get published. I finally have, at least in digital format.

Growing up in the country back in the 1950's and `60's was a great time. Kids didn't have the same distractions they have these days, which left a lot of room for the imagination to run wild.

That young swashbuckler was no different.

The melodic rhythm and vivid imagery of Swashbuckler's Mommy will captivate your imagination and entertain you as it lights up the movie screen of your mind.

Regardless of life's circumstances going on around you, you'll come away from Swashbuckler's Mommy knowing that at least for the moment, all is as it should be in the world.

Hi Dave,

Gosh, I am certainly surprised by your talent. Where was all of that back in the 80's. At that time in our lives, I strangely remember the jokester and not the poet. Well, no matter. It was a wonderful poem, and I am so happy that you have shared it. Like all the others, I can't wait to hear more. Furthermore, are you going to publish any of them. I for one, think this one ranks at the top. Even Max Lucado could do no better, in my humble opinion. Your friend always

Swashbuckler's Mommy has been produced in digital format as a PDF (Portable Document File), viewable from any computer equipped with software that can read it. Most computers have this capability.

Drawing on the artistic talent of his wife, Carrie Charley-Franzwa, Dave was finally able to transfer the illustration for Swashbuckler's Mommy, which he's carried around in his imagination since 1989, into her mind, then to canvas, and finally to this digital format.

(Click here for a sample of the main graphic and poem. The graphic in the PDf is much better quality, but I just couldn't see giving away the farm.)

"Like much of my work, Swashbuckler's Mommy has a Christian flavor to it, but it certainly wasn't written to exclude anyone. It's poetry written from a standpoint of the love of a son for his mother. I won't deny who I am nor the beliefs that I hold.

It wouldn't be me (I don't think;-)."

- Dave Franzwa

You might be thinking that poetry would make a nice gift, but won't it go stale once the occasion has passed? After all, Mother's Day (for instance) only comes around once a year.

That might be a valid argument if it wasn't for the nature of story-poems. They're more like tales set to verse.

And who's to say that just because a certain occasion presents itself, that the poetry has to be about that occasion?

Have you ever given someone a book on their birthday? Was it a book about birthdays?

I rather doubt it.

The same goes for poetry. At least story-poems.

A nice little story-poem can be given as a gift any time of the year, whether it's a special occasion or just an I-was-thinking-of-you gift.

If it's part of a collectable set, that simply adds value to the gift.
